A PIONEER MICROFUNDING INSTITUTION IN ARGENTINA
Emprenda (formerly known as FIS – Social Investment Fund) was created in 1999 by young social entrepreneurs in the far away rural areas of the Argentine North-East and it has established itself as one of the main micro-funded institutions in Argentina.
Emprenda operates through 9 branches in 6 provinces of Argentina, providing access to credit in urban, as well as rural areas for:
- working capital,
- fixed assets (business and housing renovations),
- solar panels for population not connected to the electrical grid.
The profile of the clients is varied: rural families, small companies, service providers in semi-urban neighborhoods, immigrant working population (textile, agriculture).
The characteristic in common is the exclusion from the formal financial system.
Demeter Foundation intervened during the organization´s launching stage:
- a loan for initial capital issuance,
- setting up of an Advisory Council composed of independent professionals,
- mentorship for the young leaders of the initiative.
This contribution was essential at the beginning of the urban operations (2003-2004). Later on, it was consolidated with the strategic association made with the Peruvian group ACP (2008).
