Project description
Defy Ventures

TRAINING AND REINSERTION DEDICATED FUND FOR EX-CONVICTS

Defy Ventures is a training and reinsertion New-York based organization created in 2010, financed by private funding. To fulfill its mission, Defy is surrounded by leading and influential executives: it helps transform men and women with criminal records into entrepreneurs, supporting their evolution as individuals suitable for employment and with the possibility to be good parents to their children.

Vision: a great number of individuals with criminal records are potential entrepreneurs and represent the most overlooked seedbed of talent in the United States.

Interventions: a 12-month program like a MBA-type training, high-level tutorship, enhancing personality and professional insertion services.

What makes this program unique: the active participation of companies’ leaders such as professors and advisors.

Financial support: Defy Ventures organizes a series of contests granting up to $150,000 to the entrepreneurs to help them launch their activities.

Results

Demeter Foundation is part of the Advisory Committee of Defy Ventures and funds the initial capital of some of the entrepreneurs chosen by Defy to launch their own venture.

Achievements

  • One year after the launching of Defy Ventures, 21 beneficiaries of the pilot category had created their own company and all of them had obtained income after the first six weeks,
  • Several of these companies became profitable in a few months and were able to employ other programs’ members,
  • Defy Ventures predicts a ratio of recidivism of its participants lower than 10%, whereas the national average is higher than 50%.
